Everything here supports the same four things: correct nutrition, an enclosure that fits the bird, enrichment that replaces the foraging work a captive parrot no longer has to do, and the basic health equipment every keeper should own before an emergency. Two material failures account for a large share of avoidable poisonings and injuries. The first is zinc: galvanised wire, zinc-plated chain, clips and quick links are all chewed by parrots and cause zinc toxicosis. Use 304 or 316 stainless steel hardware, or heavy powder-coated iron with intact coating. The second is fraying rope: cotton and sisal fibres wrap around toes and cause constriction injuries, and swallowed strands cause crop and gut impaction. Inspect rope items weekly and trim or discard at the first sign of unravelling.
The most dangerous item in the house is not sold here at all. Overheated PTFE-coated cookware releases fumes that kill birds within minutes, and self-cleaning oven cycles do the same. Keep birds out of the kitchen and ventilate well.
No product substitutes for time, space and social contact. A parrot with the best cage on the market and no daily interaction will still develop the screaming, plucking and stereotyped behaviour that under-stimulation produces. Foraging feeders and destructible toys make a real difference precisely because they restore a behaviour the bird would otherwise have no outlet for - they are a supplement to your attention, not a replacement for it.

A correctly sized cage with correct bar spacing, at least three natural-wood perches of varying diameter, stainless steel bowls, a species-appropriate formulated pellet, destructible chew toys, two foraging feeders, a digital gram scale, a travel carrier and a basic first-aid kit including styptic powder.
Often not. The risks are unknown coatings, galvanised or zinc-plated components, bar spacing that does not match the stated species, and latches a large parrot opens easily. Choose 304 or 316 stainless steel or a heavy powder-coated wrought iron cage from a known manufacturer.
Destructible wood, palm and cardboard items are consumables and should be replaced continuously - weekly for macaws and cockatoos. Non-destructible toys should be rotated weekly from a stored pool rather than left permanently in the cage.
Stainless steel (304 or 316) is inert, lasts decades and cannot be chewed through to a toxic layer, which makes it the better choice for macaws and cockatoos. Good powder-coated wrought iron is a reasonable and cheaper option for smaller species provided the coating stays intact.
Usually not. A bird on 60-70 per cent quality formulated pellet plus varied fresh vegetables rarely needs a general multivitamin, and vitamins A and D3 accumulate. Supplement for identified needs - a laying hen, a growing chick, an African Grey with low calcium - on veterinary advice.
Send us an enquiry describing the species you are considering and we will put together a list of what that particular bird actually needs, sized correctly. This site takes enquiries only and never asks for card, bank or wallet details.
