Complete Parrot Nutrition Guide

Proper nutrition is the single most important factor in your parrot's health and longevity. A well-fed parrot will have vibrant plumage, strong bones, clear eyes, and boundless energy. Unfortunately, seed-only diets — once considered standard — are now known to cause fatty liver disease, vitamin A deficiency, and shortened lifespans.

The Pellet Foundation (50-70% of Diet)

High-quality organic pellets should form the base of your parrot's diet. Unlike seed mixes, pellets are nutritionally complete — your bird can't pick out favorites and leave the rest. Look for brands like Harrison's, ZuPreem Natural, or Roudybush that use whole-food ingredients without artificial colors.

Fresh Fruits & Vegetables (20-30%)

Offer a rainbow of fresh produce daily: dark leafy greens (kale, spinach, Swiss chard), orange vegetables (sweet potato, carrots, butternut squash — rich in Vitamin A), berries, apple slices, pomegranate, mango, and papaya. Chop into species-appropriate sizes and serve in a separate bowl from pellets.

Healthy Extras (5-10%)

Nuts (almonds, walnuts, macadamia — in shell for enrichment), sprouted seeds, cooked whole grains (quinoa, brown rice), and legumes (lentils, chickpeas). These provide healthy fats, protein variety, and foraging enrichment.

⚠️ Toxic Foods — Never Feed

Species-Specific Notes

Eclectus: Require higher fruit and vegetable ratios (up to 80%) due to their uniquely long digestive tract. Avoid artificial vitamins.
Macaws: Need more healthy fats — add extra nuts (especially macadamia and Brazil nuts).
Lorikeets: Require a specialized nectar diet — standard pellets are inappropriate.
African Greys: Prone to calcium deficiency — supplement with calcium-rich vegetables and a mineral block.

Feeding Schedule

Offer fresh food in the morning and remove uneaten produce after 4-6 hours to prevent bacterial growth. Pellets can remain available throughout the day. Fresh, clean water should always be available — change twice daily.
