Beginner's Guide to Parrot Ownership
Thinking about bringing a parrot into your home? This guide covers everything first-time owners need to know — from choosing the right species to surviving the first week together.
Choosing the Right Species
Your lifestyle determines the best match:
- Apartment / noise-sensitive: Cockatiels, Pionus, or Parrotlets — quieter species
- First-time owner: Budgies, cockatiels, or green-cheeked conures — forgiving and social
- Experienced / want a talker: African Grey, Amazon, or Indian Ringneck
- Family with children: Cockatiels, conures — sturdy and playful
- Long-term companion: Macaw, Cockatoo — 50+ year commitment
Essential First Supplies Checklist
- ✅ Appropriate-sized cage (biggest you can afford)
- ✅ 3-4 perches of varying types
- ✅ Stainless steel food and water bowls
- ✅ High-quality pellets for your species
- ✅ Fresh fruits and vegetables
- ✅ 4-5 toys (foraging, chewing, enrichment)
- ✅ Mineral block or cuttlebone
- ✅ Cage liner (plain newspaper works great)
- ✅ Avian first-aid kit
- ✅ Contact info for a certified avian vet
The First Week at Home
Day 1-3: Let your bird observe from inside the cage. Speak softly. Don't force interaction. Offer treats through the bars.
Day 4-5: Open the cage door and sit nearby calmly. Let your bird come to you.
Day 6-7: Begin gentle step-up training with a favorite treat reward.
Important: It's normal for new birds to be quiet, eat less, and seem shy. This can last 1-3 weeks. Seek a vet if your bird stops eating entirely.
Costs to Expect
Beyond the initial purchase: cage (€200-900), annual vet checkups (€80-150), food (€30-60/month), toys (€20-40/month), and emergency vet fund (keep €500+ saved). Parrots are not cheap pets — plan accordingly.
